The North Side Christian Health Center provides comprehensive whole-person primary and preventive health care to the underserved in accordance with its Christian principles and values.
Impact Story
The North Side Christian Health Center (NSCHC) was founded in 1993 as an anchor in Pittsburgh’s economically challenged and socially depressed North Side. The organization is committed to providing quality, holistic health care to individuals without regard to their ability to pay.
Executive Director Floyd Cephas took the helm in 2004 and increased staffing, established a partnership with Mercy Behavioral Health for mental health services, and tripled the operating budget. In 2008 the organization renovated their 14,500 square foot building, which now offers 14 exam rooms, state-of-the-art equipment, and services including medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmaceutical counseling, and more.
“We are a patient-centered medical home,” said Mr. Cephas. “The patient is in the middle of everything we do.”
Bridgeway Capital recently provided a loan for NSCHC to bridge the receipt of a grant for operating expenses. According to Mr. Cephas, the financing came at a crucial time – they were in a suspended mode and the loan allowed the organization to continue operating and serving patients. The funding also helped NSCHC retain 6 jobs. Learn more from the impact video below.
NSCHC continues to work toward the health and wellness of the residents in the North Side and surrounding neighborhoods. In the last year alone, the organization worked with approximately 6,000 patients. As further recognition of its achievements, NSCHC was recognized as a 2013 Health Care Hero by The Pittsburgh Business Times for community outreach in the “organization” category.
“Sixty percent of the North Side’s residents live at or below 200% of the poverty level, so the need is great,” said Mr. Cephas. “We see sick people, and we are bent on improving their outcomes.”
