North Hills Community Outreach (NHCO) was founded in 1987 after people in the communities of northern Allegheny County mobilized to help local flood victims.
NHCO charges no fees for its services, which include food pantries, support groups, employment training and transportation. In 2005-06, NHCO assisted 6,331 families in need toward stability and self-sufficiency by providing $837,332 in funds, goods and services.
Impact Story
“People Helping People” — That’s the mission of North Hills Community Outreach (NHCO), an 18-year-old human services agency that addresses the needs of people in poverty, hardship or crisis.
With Bridgeway Capital’s help, NHCO formed an innovative agreement with the Borough of Millvale. In exchange for renovations and a first floor community center for Millvale residents, NHCO signed a lease with the borough for $1 per year for 33 years with another 33 years at similar terms. The building houses NHCO’s operations on the second floor.
The NHCO-Millvale arrangement serves as a model for Bridgeway Capital’s Beyond Bricks and Mortar program. This program helps nonprofits focus on their core mission by helping to solve real estate problems and financing the solutions.
Benefits of the new building include:
- Offices for both the Utility Specialist and Service Coordinator, allowing privacy and dignity for the growing numbers of families in need.
- An expanded workroom to accommodate larger numbers of volunteers.
- Wheelchair access throughout the building.
- The number of families served by the NHCO-Millvale Satellite has more than doubled in the past two years.
“This new building is fantastic,” said Maria Christina, Millvale Outreach Manager… “The wheelchair access is a crucial benefit — all of our volunteers have big hearts, and now we can invite them to help us continue helping other people.”
