PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Recently, Bridgeway Capital honored Sister Betty Sundry of the Sisters of Divine Providence and Frederick Douglas of Cosmos Technologies with the 2011 Impact Award at Bridgeway Capital’s annual celebration, held in late October at Heinz Field in Downtown Pittsburgh.
Sister Betty Sundry was an early investor in Bridgeway Capital, and helped her community make a loan to Bridgeway Capital in 1992 long before many other institutions got involved. They took a risk, which helped the organization build its credibility and make its first loans. Sister Betty served as a founding Board member and continued on the Board of Directors for 10 years through the beginning of 2001, even serving as Chairperson of the Board. Today, Sister Betty is the Director of Social Concerns at the Sisters of Divine Providence, and is still an active supporter of Bridgeway Capital’s work in western Pennsylvania.
Frederick Douglas is an entrepreneur and a long-time customer of Bridgeway Capital. A native of St. Kitts in the Caribbean, he moved to the U.S. in 1977 and earned his MS in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University. He founded Cosmos Technologies in 1997, and in 2004, he approached us for a loan to purchase two trucks to help him win a contract. Since then, his company has quadrupled in size and added 15 employees. He works with many large clients including Alcosan, Duquesne Light, Equitable Gas, and the Sports & Exhibition Authority. Today, the company’s services include wastewater treatment engineering, water management, construction management, and quality assurance. In addition to his success, Fred lives his commitment to improving lives and making a difference in the community.
“This award recognizes the commitment of individuals who have devoted their lives to important missions in western Pennsylvania,” said Mark Peterson, President of Bridgeway Capital. “Thank you Sister Betty and Fred Douglas for supporting our region’s entrepreneurs, and for helping us work toward a thriving region for all.”
