Company Description

K9 Kingdom is a woman-owned, full-service pet care facility located off Route 19 in Wexford, Pa. The business’ services include a doggie daycare, indoor dog park, professional grooming, dog training, a self-service dog wash, pet limo, and overnight boarding.

Impact Story

A day at the spa, hours of socializing, and an evening at a comfy condo is a getaway most pet owners would find hard to turn down. With similar amenities offered at K9 Kingdom, dog lovers know that when they go on vacation, their dogs will, too.

Owner Christin Bummer said one of the goals of K9 Kingdom is to develop personal relationships with owners and their pets, so both can enjoy time away from home. But K9 Kingdom isn’t a typical boarding facility. The indoor dog park gives pets the opportunity to socialize, doggie daycare provides exercise during the workday, and professional groomers make sure pets are returned to their owners in top condition.

Bummer, who holds a degree in Animal Science and has 15 years of industry experience, worked diligently on developing her idea over the course of several years. In the midst of the recession, she found it difficult to secure the capital needed to turn her business plan into a viable enterprise. Financing from Bridgeway Capital allowed Bummer to open K9 Kingdom in March 2008 and Bridgeway’s business education program is giving her the resources needed to grow.

“Working with the business education programs at Bridgeway has been a tremendous experience for me,” Bummer said. “We had access to one-on-one consulting services, networking events, some business workshops, and it’s been a really great way to zero in on working on the business and figuring out how to improve the bottom line with some professional guidance and feedback that would otherwise be very costly or unattainable.”

Since enrolling in various facets of the business education program, Bummer has seen her overall sales increase 35 percent in one year. K9 Kingdom now employs five full-time and 10 part-time staff and is increasing their doggie regulars each month.

“The future of K9 Kingdom is a very promising one,” Bummer said.
